Gun Safety – Sporting Clays in the Fall
Nov 18, 2018 @ 12:15 pm - 2:30 pm
Some people have never held a shotgun, or are even afraid of holding a shotgun. We want to allow those members that might be interested in learning more about shotguns a chance to do so. Gun safety is always the most important part of handling a shotgun. This project will introduce people to shotguns and sporting clays. Education and self awareness of guns and gun safety are the primary goals of this project.
We will be heading to Shane’s Sporting Clays for our experience (30 mins east of downtown Winston-Salem). The course charges per target ($.54 per target, $.84 with gun rental). To shoot the half course (approximately 7 stations, 50 targets total), the cost will be $42 with shotgun rental (or $27 if you bring your own). Ammunition is not included and can be purchased at the range. If you rent a gun you need to purchase ammo from the range. (approximate cost is $8.25 per box of 25 rounds, you will need 2 boxes for the half course – ammo costs vary but usually run between $8 – $12 a box).

Sporting Clays is a challenging clay target game designed to simulate field shooting. On a Sporting Clays course, shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that duplicate the flight path of gamebirds, such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots. Courses are laid out in natural surroundings and include shooting “stations” with shooters moving from one station to the next to complete the course. Each “station” presents shooters with a different type of shot. At any “station,” targets may be thrown as singles, simultaneous pairs, following pairs (one target right after the other), or report pairs (the second target launched at the sound of the gun being fired at the first). To further challenge shooters, target size may vary from the standard trap/skeet clay bird to the smaller “midi” and “mini” targets, or a flat disc shaped “battue” target. There are even special “rabbit” targets that are thrown on end and skitter across the ground.
**Note- If some members choose to bring their own weapons, they will be at liberty to decide who is allowed to shoot their weapons & use their ammunition. Anyone who uses their ammunition will also give them some money to help cover the costs. All state and federal firearm laws must be complied with and we will have members sign a release of liability to the Jaycees when attending.**
